By Eric B. Robins, MD
Michelle, a bright, perky, 21-year-old woman, arrived in my office complaining of severe bladder pain. She had to urinate frequently and urgently. I did a complete medical workup but could find nothing out of the ordinary—by the standards of my profession there was nothing wrong with Michelle. Yet it was clear to me that Michelle’s pain was real, and her physical symptoms were real. After I had finished looking in her bladder with a cystoscope and found everything to be normal, I ventured, “Sometimes women with your symptoms have a history of sexual abuse or molestation. Is this possible with you?” In the corner of her eye, the slightest of tears welled up. It turned out that Michelle had been sexually penetrated by an uncle almost daily from the age of three, till she was ten years old.
I asked Michelle to think back upon these memories and find a part of her body where they were strongest. She said she could feel them acutely in her lower abdomen and pelvis. I asked her to rate them on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the mildest and 10 being the most intense. Michelle rated her feelings at 10 out of a possible 10.
I then spent 45 minutes working with Michelle, using some of the simple yet powerful techniques I describe below. I then asked her to rate her level of discomfort. It was a 1—complete peace. I urged her to cast around in her body for the remnants of any of the disturbed feelings she had previously felt. She could not find them, no matter how hard she tried. The emotionally charged memories had been so thoroughly released that a physical shift had occurred in her body. Her bladder condition disappeared. In the three years since that office visit, it has never once returned.

Tapping into Forgiveness
If you don't know how to perform the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) copy and paste this URL to access instructions: http://www.lifeworkswitheft.com/pdf/eft_short_cut_method.pdf
Round 1:
Even though I still feel the pain of this injury and it doesn’t feel safe to let the anger go, I deeply and profoundly respect who I am anyway. (repeat 3 times)
This pain still feels so raw
All this anger and pain
I’m so angry about this
How could he/she do this to me?
Feeling this anger is safer than feeling the pain
I need this anger
I refuse to let go of this anger
This anger is my protection, and it’s not safe to let it go
Round 2:
Even though I still feel some of this anger and I don’t want to let him/her off the hook, I deeply and completely love who I am anyway. (repeat 3 times)
This remaining pain and anger
I don’t want to let him/her off the hook
They need to know how much they hurt me
They need to pay for what they did
If I let this anger go, I might be vulnerable to another attack
I still need this anger to keep me safe
I need to protect this pain with my anger
I refuse to see the part I played in this
(Repeat Rounds 1 & 2 if intensity level did not drop 3 or more on the 0 – 10 scale)
Round 3:
Even though a part of me wants to let this anger go, a part of me still wants to hold onto it, and I’m pulling for both part. (Repeat 3 times)
I want to let go of this anger
No I don’t
Yes I do
This anger is only hurting me and I choose to let it go
I choose to let this anger go
I no longer choose to give him/her my power
I choose to reclaim my power by letting this anger go
They do not deserve all this energy.
(Repeat rounds 2 & 3 until the intensity of the anger is at zero. Feel free to choose whatever words or feelings that are coming up for you.)

EFT Help for Veterans
All our Vets are on the forefront of my mind today - Veterans Day. So I want all of you who are suffering from post war trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, or addiction that there is no need to suffer.
There are so many individuals and organizations who are willing and able to offer their services free of charge. I not only offer free sessions, using the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), to any post-war vet, but I'm also a member of Give an Hour (giveanhour.org).
EFT has been clinically proven to collapse the underlying issues that support the symptoms of PTSD and most other conditions our Vets experience. Please check out the video titled "EFT for War Veterans" at http://emofree.com/freevideos.aspx.
I realize it's not easy to reach out for help. Please remember, when you suffer all who love you and support you suffer along with you. You committed your life for us; now allow us to give back to you.
With love and appreciation,
Forrest

Why Should I Forgive You?
It's practically impossible to go through life without being hurt by somebody. Most of us humans have a hard time letting go of such injuries and carry these scars of pain, resentment and anger with us for months, years, or even a lifetime.
Forgiveness can be a difficult concept to understand. I often hear, "If I forgive her, then she got away with what they did". Or, “Forgiving him would mean I accept what he did to me.” My response to this: “So, not to forgive is like taking the poison (continuing to suffer for what they did or didn’t do to you) and expecting them to die!”
In reality, forgiveness is not letting the person of the hook for what they did or didn’t do, it’s releasing the barbed hook that continues to cause you pain and suffering so your wound can heal. Forgiveness is one of the greatest acts of self love you can do.
Think about it…Anger, resentment and pain take a lot of energy. When there’s more energy going out than coming in, you are operating from an energy deficit. This sets you up for depression, disease, and/or chronic physical pain. If you are continuing to harbor “ill feelings” towards someone, who are you really hurting? YOU! So, I ask you, is this person worth all this energy you continue to give them?
Now you might be asking, “OK, I understand that forgiveness is something I do for me and my own healing, but how do I go about forgiving someone if all if feel is anger and pain when I think about this person? The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a perfect tool to use to get you to a place of forgiveness.
EFT can collapse the energy disruptions that trigger the emotional toxins when tuned into the hurtful event. When you no longer feel angry and resentful, you can gain objectivity and emotional distance from the event. This clarity will often lead you to a new perspective. Mostly pain begets pain. Whenever you have been the one who has been the source of pain for someone else, it is because you were in pain, right? When you recognize the person who hurt you must have been hurting terribly themselves, forgiveness comes much easier.

Using EFT to Clear Financial Fears
Though the media and perhaps even your investment or bank accounts may tell you otherwise, it IS possible to maintain your sense of well-being and feelings of abundance. For most, however, the constant messages of doom and gloom are creating anxiety, fear, and even panic.
The problem with fear is, all the energy is being shunted away from the problem solving part of the brain to the more primitive back part of the brain. Fear and anxiety put you are in fight or flight mode. This response is really important if you are facing a physical threat like a Bengal Tiger, but unless you’re going to duke it out with AIG or Bernie Madoff, your energy would be better placed elsewhere.
Done correctly, the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), will quickly and efficiently clear the fear. This frees you to be logical, lucid and creative. These are the ingredients for success, no matter what is presenting as a perceived crises.
Besides tapping on the current fear and anxiety, I suggest you also assess your beliefs and personal relationship with money. There may be some old junk that needs be cleared to make room for greater financial abundance.

Eckhart Tolle’s Bridge to EFT
Having just finished Eckhart Tolle’s, A New Earth, I am feeling exhilarated. Imagine! A New York Times best seller that describes and explains how and why the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) works! Obviously, that wasn’t the point of the book. I don’t know if Mr. Tolle is currently aware of the effectiveness of EFT and how it is transforming the lives of millions of people all over the world. I am quite sure, however, if he had been aware at the time of his writing, he would have instructed his readers in at least the basic technique.
Tolle’s answer to how to break free of the “pain-body” has spiritual merit. He states that the pain-body (i.e., the accumulation of emotional pain carried in a person’s energy field) does not cause the suffering that we inflict on ourselves and others, but the identification we have with it. He reports that once we know that the toxic emotions we are feeling is the pain-body in us, this knowing is all we need to break from our identification with it.
I agree that in separating our authentic selves from our ego created thought of self, we become conscious and thus awaken from our illusion of suffering. And, I’m not saying we shouldn’t strive to live our lives in consciousness. I’m saying we can rise above our “pain-body” by becoming conscious of our egoic thoughts and subsequent pain-body response through EFT. It’s another means through which to meet the same end…Emotional Freedom.
What Tolle has provided those of us who practice EFT is a wide spread education as to the interactive relationship between our thoughts and our energy system and how this relationship creates our toxic emotions and our subsequent discontent. It offers us a conceptual framework and language that is now understood by the many who have read his book.
For example, Tolle writes:
“What is a negative emotion? An emotion that is toxic to the body and interferes with its balance and harmonious functioning. Fear, anxiety, anger, bearing a grudge, sadness, hatred or intense dislike, jealousy, envy—all disrupt the energy flow through the body, affect the heart, the immune system, digestion, production of hormones, and so on.”
Though Tolle contends that the emotion creates the disruption of the energy flow and Gary Craig contends in his Discovery Statement that “The cause of all negative emotion is a disruption in the body’s energy system”, I say mox nix. The important concept here is that by restoring the flow of energy, the toxic emotions are freed.
My experience is that many of my clients are reticent to “focus on the negative” when developing the “setup statement.” I often hear, “Why do I verbalize the issue I’m trying to get rid of? Doesn’t thinking about it make it stronger?” This is an unfortunate backlash, in my opinion, to the positive thinking movement.
Tolle deftly explains why it is important to tune into the thought, memory, or belief that signals the energy disruption and accept this state without judgment. He states:
“The remnant of pain left behind by every strong negative emotion that is not full faced, accepted, and then let go of join together to form an energy field that lives in the very cells of your body. You can’t argue with what is. Well you can, but if you do, you suffer. Accepting [what you feel] means you allow yourself to feel whatever it is you are feeling at the moment.”
Now, during the initial consultation with a prospective client, I ask if they have read A New Earth. Many have either read it, watched the interview series Oprah had with Tolle and/or listened to the taped podcasts of this series. For those who have been exposed to A New Earth, it easily serves as a reference point to introduce EFT and the concepts of energy disruptions as the source of emotional dis-ease. This bridge has greatly reduced the initial apprehension to engage in EFT.
Thank you, Eckhart Tolle, for bringing the paradigm of energy disruptions as the cause of emotional pain into the mainstream. Oh, and thank you too, Oprah!
